Henderson County Fire Department was chartered in 1978 and provides fire protection to all of Henderson County outside the city limits of Lexington and Scotts Hill. The department consists of eleven fire stations that are manned by 190 volunteer firefighters. The department has a full-time paid chief, one part-time paid assistant chief, and one part-time paid assistant chief / training officer.
Our protection district covers 550 square miles and has a population of 16,500 people. We have mutual aid agreements with the City of Lexington and Town of Scotts Hill.
All properties outside the city limits of Lexington and Scotts Hill have a classification 6 insurance rating. Due to our low rating, effective prevention program, and suppression capability, Henderson County property owners average saving 3.1 million dollars annually due to the existence of the fire department.
The primary goals of the Fire Department are to:
- Protect life and property from fire
- Educate the public on fire safety and prevention
